JBS Ottumwa Earns EPA Award for Environmental Project

Our Ottumwa, Iowa, pork production facility was awarded the 2020 EPA Region 7 Pollution Prevention Award, which is awarded to businesses, industry, tribes and nonprofits from Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska for their environmental excellence.

This is the second year the facility has received the award. First was in 2018, the plant was recognized for its water waste reduction efforts.

“When people think about slaughterhouses, they do not think of environmental stewards. We want to change that for JBS Pork,” said Kari Leonhard, corporate environmental engineer for JBS USA Pork. “People want to know that they are making a difference, helpful, and positive. That’s what the award represents to the entire plant team and to me.”

The nitrogen reduction project, for which the 2020 recognition was given, was a business initiative in all pork plants.
